Full-year 2023 results: sales up 31% to DKK 232.3 billion
Novo Nordisk reported 2023 sales of DKK 232.3 billion, up 31%, with obesity care sales up 147% — a sign of how fast GLP-1 demand is growing and why the company is pouring money into production.
Novo Nordisk, the maker of semaglutide (sold as Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus), reported full-year 2023 sales of DKK 232.3 billion, a 31% increase in Danish kroner and 36% at constant exchange rates [1]. Operating profit rose 37% to DKK 102.6 billion, and net profit climbed 51% to DKK 83.7 billion [1].
The growth was concentrated in the company's diabetes and obesity business, which brought in DKK 215.1 billion, up 38% as reported [1]. Within that, GLP-1 diabetes sales grew 48% in Danish kroner, and obesity care sales grew 147% to DKK 41.6 billion [1]. Rare disease sales moved the other way, falling 16% in kroner, which the company attributed to a reduction in manufacturing output [1].
The United States and Canada drove much of the result. Sales in North America Operations rose 50% in Danish kroner, or 54% at constant exchange rates, compared with 11% growth (16% at constant rates) in International Operations [1]. Diluted earnings per share were DKK 18.62, up from DKK 12.22 in 2022 [1].
CEO Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen said the results reflect that "more than 40 million people are now benefiting from our innovative diabetes and obesity treatments," and said the 2024 focus would be "on reaching more patients, progressing and expanding our pipeline as well as the continued significant expansion of our production capacity" [1].
What the company expects in 2024
Novo Nordisk guided to sales growth of 18% to 26% at constant exchange rates for 2024, with operating profit growth of 21% to 29% at constant rates [1]. Reported in Danish kroner, the company said sales growth would be about 1 percentage point lower and operating profit growth about 2 percentage points lower [1].
The company also flagged two early pipeline milestones from January 2024: completion of the first phase 3a trial of IcoSema, a fixed-ratio once-weekly combination of the basal insulin icodec and semaglutide, and a phase 1 trial of oral amycretin in obesity care [1]. Detailed results for those trials were not included in the announcement.
On capital returns, the board planned to propose a final dividend of DKK 6.40 per share for 2023 at the Annual General Meeting, bringing the expected total 2023 dividend to DKK 9.40 per share, including a DKK 3.00 interim dividend paid in August 2023 [1]. The board also decided to start a new share repurchase program of up to DKK 20 billion [1].
Why it matters for patients
Earnings reports are not clinical news, but they are one of the clearest public signals about how much of these medicines is being made and sold. The 147% jump in obesity care sales shows demand that has repeatedly outpaced supply, and the company's stated 2024 priorities include "continued significant expansion of our production capacity" [1]. That expansion is the underlying factor behind whether specific doses and brands become easier to fill at US pharmacies.
The North America figure matters too: with sales in the region up 50% in kroner [1], US prescriptions are a large share of the business, which is part of why US supply and pricing questions get so much attention.
Several things patients often ask about are not addressed in this announcement. It does not break out sales by individual brand, so Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus revenue figures are not given here. It also does not give dose-by-dose supply status, timelines for resolving shortages, or any US list-price or insurance-coverage changes. Those details have not been disclosed in this report. The rare disease decline tied to lower manufacturing output [1] is a reminder that production capacity is a real constraint across the company's portfolio, not just for GLP-1 drugs.
What happens next
Novo Nordisk listed a Capital Markets Day in Copenhagen on 7 March 2024 and its Annual General Meeting on 21 March 2024, where the final dividend proposal was to be put to shareholders [1]. First-quarter 2024 results were scheduled for 2 May 2024, first-half results for 7 August 2024, and nine-month results for 6 November 2024 [1]. Those reports are where updated sales trends and any revised outlook would appear.
