Exendin-4, the peptide that became exenatide, is isolated from Gila monster venom
In 1992, researchers reported isolating a new peptide, exendin-4, from the venom of the Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) and showed it acted on receptors in rat pancreatic tissue, causing a three-fold rise in cAMP. Exendin-4 alone did not change amylase release at concentrations up to 1 micromolar, but combined with cholecystokinin above 30 picomolar it potentiated enzyme release. Exenatide appears among the paper's indexed substance terms.
