Exendin-4 is isolated from Gila monster venom
Researchers reported exendin-4, a new peptide from the venom of Heloderma suspectum, and showed it acted on receptors in rat pancreatic tissue and raised cellular cAMP. Exenatide, the first GLP-1 drug, is a synthetic copy of this peptide. Its resistance to the enzymes that destroy human GLP-1 within minutes is what made a GLP-1 drug possible at all.
