Byetta, the first GLP-1 receptor agonist, is off the U.S. market
AstraZeneca discontinued Byetta (exenatide) on Oct. 25, 2024, and discontinued the longer-acting version, Bydureon BCise, on Oct. 28, 2024, after notifying the FDA. UnitedHealthcare told providers in December 2024 that it had identified preferred covered GLP-1 alternatives for members on its plans.

Symlin, an amylin analog for diabetes, was approved in 2005 with a severe hypoglycemia warning
The FDA approved Symlin (pramlintide acetate) in 2005 for people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who use mealtime insulin and have not reached their glucose goals despite optimal insulin therapy. The injectable amylin analog carries a boxed warning for severe hypoglycemia, and its label directs cutting the mealtime insulin dose by 50% when treatment starts. The prescribing information was last revised in December 2019.
