FDA approves Byetta, the first GLP-1 receptor agonist
Exenatide, a synthetic version of a peptide found in Gila monster venom, is approved as a twice-daily injection for type 2 diabetes under NDA 021773. It opens the drug class that eventually produces Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound.

FDA approves Symlin (pramlintide), the amylin analog
Pramlintide is approved for people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who use mealtime insulin and have not reached their glucose goals. It carries a boxed warning for severe hypoglycemia and requires halving the mealtime insulin dose at initiation. It never achieves meaningful commercial scale.
