FDA approved orlistat in 1999 as a prescription weight drug that blocks fat absorption

In 1999 the FDA approved orlistat, sold as Xenical, for adults with a body mass index of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with risk factors such as high blood pressure or diabetes. The 120-milligram prescription drug works in the gut by blocking the enzyme lipase, so about 25 percent of the fat in a meal is not broken down and leaves the body in bowel movements. A 60-milligram version later became the over-the-counter product Alli.
