Berberine matched metformin on blood sugar in 36-patient pilot study
A three-month randomized pilot published in May 2008 found that berberine lowered average blood sugar about as much as metformin in 36 adults newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. HbA1c in the berberine group fell from 9.5% to 7.5%, and triglycerides also dropped. Across the whole trial, 20 patients (34.5%) reported transient gastrointestinal side effects.
