    XENDOS publishes: orlistat cuts diabetes progression over four years

    The four-year XENical in the prevention of Diabetes in Obese Subjects trial (n=3,305) reports mean weight loss of 5.8 kg with orlistat versus 3.0 kg with placebo at four years, and a fall in progression to type 2 diabetes from 9.0% to 6.2% (HR 0.63). It remains the longest randomized trial of an approved weight drug.

    FDA bans dietary supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids

    The only time the FDA has removed an entire supplement ingredient from the US market. Bitter orange (p-synephrine) becomes the primary replacement stimulant in weight-loss and sports supplements, and subsequent research finds reformulated 'ephedra-free' products have similar acute cardiovascular stimulant actions.
