FDA withdraws Meridia (sibutramine) after SCOUT trial shows 16% rise in heart events
The FDA asked Abbott Laboratories on October 7, 2010, to pull the weight-loss drug Meridia (sibutramine) after the SCOUT cardiovascular outcomes trial showed a 16% increase in serious heart-related events, including nonfatal heart attack, nonfatal stroke, resuscitation after cardiac arrest and cardiovascular death. Abbott agreed and waived its right to a hearing, and approval was formally withdrawn effective December 21, 2010. About 100,000 people in the United States were taking the drug at the time.

Victoza (liraglutide), Novo Nordisk's once-daily GLP-1 receptor agonist injection for type 2 diabetes, was first listed as marketed in the United States on Jan. 25, 2010, under application number NDA 022341. The prefilled pen delivers doses of 0.6 mg, 1.2 mg or 1.8 mg, and the label carries a boxed warning for thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodents.
