Medicare's 2003 weight-loss exclusion still blocks GLP-1 coverage
The Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 barred Part D from covering drugs used for weight loss, and that provision remains law, so repeal still requires an act of Congress. The Treat and Reduce Obesity Act would remove the exclusion, but the Congressional Budget Office has scored the cost at $35 billion over nine years, or $34.6 billion over 10 years in another accounting. The bill has been introduced repeatedly since 2012 and has never received a floor vote.
